Those Who Love Their Jobs: Saba Tümer

We all know the saying, “If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.”The secret to a happy life naturally lies in a happy career. We asked six people who have managed to make this saying the centre of their lives about the secrets of working with love.

She’s one of the first names to come to mind when we talk about television broadcasting in Turkey. Saba Tümer, who leaves a lasting impression on people with her unforgettable laugh as well as her professionalism and perspective on life, believes that finding a job that serves life’s purpose is the key to a happy career.

You’re one of those lucky people who love their job. How does loving what you do influence your view on life?

I think my occupation serves my life purpose. The more you serve your purpose, the more successful you become at what you do and

everything else just flows.

Success is inevitable when you focus on your work and keep at it. I don’t believe in failure; it’s just life’s way of saying you’re on the wrong path. When you build your life around this philosophy, i.e. get something out of what you do, you feel proud of both yourself and your job.

Most of us dreamed of being something when we were kids. Did you realize your dream, or did life lead you in a different direction? Can you tell us about your journey?

It was an interesting journey for me. When I was a kid, I would watch newscasters on TRT and mimic them in front of the mirror. I also wanted to become a singer. So, my inner voice was telling me to perform. I started with journalism, and it was my major in college. It was a miracle that I got into the university. Journalism was my second choice, imagine not studying at all and still getting in your second choice... That’s why I believe that this truly was my path. Then came journalism, and of course, my biggest goal was being on the evening news. It didn’t happen somehow. I changed course and went on to hosting a show. That’s when the doors of success opened for me.

What do you love most about your job?

I love every aspect of my job. I enjoy what I do because I love getting to know people. The answers given by the person sitting in front of me or a sentence that captures the attention of the audience can have a positive influence on their lives or even change it completely based on their mood. That’s why I believe it’s a very important job. I also believe that I spread a healing energy even if it’s just through the screen.

What about the challenges?

It’s hard. You deal with all kinds of things. You put a lot of effort in it. Every job has its difficulties but it’s especially hard being on screen since it requires a lot of discipline. I worked very hard, and at the same time I read the signs life sent me and this allowed me to serve my life purpose. But you really need to commit to it.

What is your biggest advice for people who are about to embark on a new career?

Listen to your inner voice - what the heart wants, what the soul desires... First, you should find your life goal which can only be found by asking a lot of questions, reading, and doing research. If you serve your goal in life and do what you really want, you may not earn money right away, but you’ll at least you will be happy. I believe that a long journey with a happy ending is a better path to take instead of earning a lot of money in a short period of time.
